Canon Vixia HF S21 First Impressions Camcorder Review
Previous: Part 6
Playback & ConnectivityNext: Part 8
ConclusionAudio & Other Features
• Canon still offers an external mic and headphone jack, which are always good to have.
• An optional 5.1-channel microphone can be purchased with the camcorder (and connected via the accessory shoe).
• New Video Snap features aren't bad, but we're still not impressed with the feature overall.
Audio Features
The Canon HF S21 itself doesn't have any new audio features that weren't on last year's models, but the camcorder is compatible with an optional 5.1-channel microphone that can be connected via the accessory shoe. We must reiterate that this 5.1-channel mic is an accessory, however, so it must be purchased separately from the HF S21 (the mic's model number is SM-V1).

Other Features
Video Light
No changes here, the video light is still located with the built-in flash. It pops up out of a panel located above the lens when you select video light from the menu.
Pre Record
This feature continuously stores 3 seconds of footage in the camcorder's internal buffer. So, as soon as you hit record, you've already captured 3-seconds of footage. Canon included this on last year's models.
Video Snap
We're still not crazy about this feature, but now you can choose from shooting 2, 4, or 8-second clips with the Video Snap function. This can be useful if you're trying to collect a bunch of short, even clips, but we don't think that many people will take advantage of it.
