JVC GZ-HM400 Comparison
JVC GZ-HM1 versus Canon HF S21
• The Canon HF S21 looks sleeker but it costs more than the JVC GZ-HM1
• The big advantage of the Canon is its multiple frame rate options (PF24, PF30, and a native 25p setting).
• The two camcorders have the same amount of internal memory, but the Canon HF S21 has two SD/SDHC memory card slots.
• The GZ-HM1 did better than the Canon in most of our bright light testing, although the two models put up very similar overall numbers in low light.
The Canon HF S21 did well on much of our testing, but the JVC GZ-HM1 is actually did better in colour accuracy and stabilisation. The Canon HF S21 however comes with a huge 3.5-inch LCD, an electronic viewfinder, and two alternate frame rates for capturing HD video (50i, PF25). Though the Canon costs about £100 more, the camcorder offers the same amount of internal memory as the GZ-HM1 and two card slots for more additional memory.
When it comes to video performance though the JVC is actually the better camcorder. The GZ-HM1 does not record HD video in any frame rates other than 1080/50i, however, so if you have the need for a 25p mode then you should go with the Canon HF S21 instead. Don't be fooled by the GZ-HM1's three high-speed frame rate recording options—they don't capture high-quality video (and the clips are limited to a specific length).
Making the choice between these two models comes down to what you need from your camcorder. If you prefer a sleek look and want alternate frame rates or a viewfinder, then the Canon HF S21 should be on your list. The JVC GZ-HM1 ist the better choice if you're just going to be recording footage at 50i and you don't care too much about durability and chic design.
