Conclusion

Though there aren't many upgrades in the JVC Everio GZ-HM1, it may just have a couple that matter. The most significant, of course, is the 1/2.3-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensor. We sincerely hope that the new sensor improves the low light performance of JVC's flagship camcorder. The huge increase in resolution last year cost JVC dearly in low light. Is this the technological improvement the company needs to be a viable option in low light?

The other improvements are a bit less exciting. The high resolution of the sensor will make for even sharper still photos, but JVC is already ahead of the curve in that area. Combined with the addition of a 6400 ISO setting, however, it's clear that JVC continues to be at the forefront of the camcorder-camera hybrid trend. Meanwhile, the new Advanced Image Stabilizer is intended to improve the Everios' already excellent optical image stabilization.

Since we really liked what the HM400 offered this year, we are definitely interested in getting the HM1 through our labs soon. The new JVC flagship will be available to the general public in March for $1199.95 (MSRP).
