The JVC Picsio GC-FM1 surprised us with imposing video performance, better than most budget camcorders we tested. This is thanks to the Picsio's impressive sensor resolution (8 megapixels) and its excellent auto white balance, which works very well under a variety of lighting conditions. Still, the Picsio also disappointed. The build quality, buttons, controls, and uncovered ports all diminish the device's usability. In fact, the macro switch was one of the most problematic elements of the camcorder. It is cheaply constructed and wiggles, causing the focus to get stuck between "normal" and "macro". It doesn't happen all the time, but it can be unnerving. These problems, combined with the unusually metallic design, make the FM1 a lot less attractive. Those who are concerned about the video quality and not so much about build quality will be very happy with the Picsio GC-FM1. After all, it does capture the 1080p HD video that most consumers are looking for. If you want a sturdier and more reliable device, you are better off buying another camcorder. |
