Kodak Playsport Zx3 First Impressions Camcorder Review
Previous: Part 1
Product TourNext: Part 3
Manual ControlsCompression & Media Summary
• All video is compressed using the H.264 codec on the Zx3.
• The camcorder has one Full HD setting (1920 x 1080), two other HD settings (1280 x 720), and one standard definition setting (WVGA).
• Video is recorded to removable SD/SDHC memory cards.
• The camcorder comes with editing software stored on the Playsport's internal memory. The software isn't compatible with Macs.
Compression
The Kodak Playsport uses the H.264 codec to compress video. The camcorder can record using three different HD settings—including a full 1080/30p HD option—as well as one 16:9 standard definition record mode (WVGA).
The camcorder has two frame rate options, but only a 30p frame rate can be used with the Full HD 1920 x 1080 setting. When shooting a 1280 x 720 resolution you can pick between a 30p or 60p frame rate.
| Format | Resolution | Codec |
| 1080/30p | 1920 x 1080 | H.264 |
| 720/30p | 1280 x 720 | H.264 |
| 720/60p | 1280 x 720 | H.264 |
| WVGA | 720 x 480 | H.264 |
Media
The Playsport Zx3 records video and stills to removable SD/SDHC memory cards. The card slot is located on the left side of the camcorder in the same compartment that houses the battery pack. The Zx3 also has a tiny bit of internal memory, but it is mainly reserved for the editing software that is embedded inside the camcorder.

| The card slot is well protected. |
The card slot and battery pack need to be well protected in order for the Playsport to truly withstand underwater submersion. The flip-open door that covers the card slot and battery pack locks into place and provides very good coverage for both compartments.
Editing
As we said before, the Kodak Playsport has embedded software built into the camcorder. This software is called Arcsoft Media Impressions software and it works with PC computers only. The files recorded by the Zx3 are compatible with Macs, but the Arcsoft software has no Mac support.
Since editing software is such a key element of these ultracompact camcorders, we'll give you complete breakdown of what the software can and can't do when we get the Zx3 into our labs. We're hoping Kodak made the software easy to use, with just enough features to keep people satisfied.
