Conclusion

Panasonic HDC-HS300

With all its new and improved features, the Panasonic HDC-HS300 is a strong camcorder. Experienced users will love the bevy of manual controls and the multi-function ring. Newcomers will appreciate the iA features and, presumably, a touch screen interface. A 120GB hard drive offers plenty of storage for long holidays.

Sanyo's VPC-HD2000, tested earlier this year, matched some of the Panasonic's high numbers. Both scored very high in bright and low light. Sanyo's low light sensitivity was stunning — but the Panasonic HDC-HS300 was able to surpass it. The only small disappointment: the HDC-HS300's 25p mode did not improve its low light performance at all.

Taking all this into account, the Panasonic HDC-HS300 has positioned itself as one of the best camcorders 2009. For just about £1,000 it is not the most affordable gadget. If you want to save a little, or if you want flash memory instead of a hard drive, the Panasonic HDC-TM300 is available as low as £786.80. .
