Conclusion

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2000 (approximately £450), by its very shape, may cause camcorder traditionalists to pass over it. 'A pistol grip camcorder? I think not, thank you very much.' However, after extensize testing we can tell you that the HD2000 performs well outside its class. In fact, certain aspects of its performance – particularly low light – exceeded that of more expensive models from big names like Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. The 12MP still photos (8MP native) and abundance of on-board audio ports make it a versatile tool in the videographer's kit.

Now for the bad news. Because it's a pistol grip, the handling may not be to everyone's liking. The rear-mounted joystick is far from perfect, compounding the problems of what we believe to be one of the worst menu systems ever designed. The battery life is wanting, and the lack of internal memory means you're limited to card memory. Should the card fill up in the middle of a vacation, you've got to run out to the camera store for more.

Can you live with these compromises. If so, you shouldn't be disappointed with the VPC-HD2000's performance. The price is enticing, and the size is convenient. If you needn't muck about with the menu too often, it should serve you well.
