Conclusion

Sony MHS-PM1

In many ways, the Sony MHS-PM1 (£199) is a pretty standard ultra-compact camcorder – small, cheap, and of relatively low video quality. But the PM1 does have some features other camcorders in its class don't offer. First and foremost is the swivel lens. No budget camcorder gives you such an easy way to record at self-shooting angles (for the 'Look at me, look at me!' YouTube crowd). The MHS-PM1 also stands out by including scene modes and the multiple resolution options.

The PM1's performance was pretty good, but the low light sensitivity was terrible. The real disappointment was the still image performance, where the PM1 failed to live up to its 5-megapixel classification.

We weren't convinced about the ease of use, either. The PM1 is complicated and confusing, compared to the Flip series. Besides having too many options, and cheap buttons, the software is much too complicated for beginners. However, if you prefer to have more control over your settings and want a small and compact camcorder, the Sony MHS-PM1 might be the one you are looking for. Final verdict: unique, but it's not the Flip.
